Quality control needed to be increased and customer service enhanced in order to provide the platform for future growth and success.

Tranfield selected Marcam, a business unit of Invensys, to provide the Protean enterprise resource planning (ERP) suite to help the company meet these defined goals.

Marcam's domain expertise in the food industry together with the Protean low cost of ownership and industry specific functionality proved to be a winning formula.

J and J Tranfield Ltd based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire employs approximately 300 staff and places a strong focus on product innovation and quality.

In recent years, the company has developed some excellent award winning flavoured sausages; Red Thai and Lemongrass Sausages won the Best Pork Product at the SuperMeat Awards 2003.

Among other innovative products produced are lamb, redcurrant and rosemary sausage and toulouse sausage, which includes red wine, bacon and garlic.

European Union food companies must abide by strict lot traceability regulations and Tranfield needed to automate the tracking system to control the product stream from suppliers to end consumers.

"We required a solution that met our objectives to support the development of our product range and key customer relationships, but also was flexible and expandable to accommodate our immediate and future needs." said Mike Hutchinson, Managing Director at Tranfield.

Using Protean, Tranfield will be able to implement bi-directional lot traceability, eliminating the paperwork from raw material to finished product and complying with the new EC food safety guidelines.

Alistair MacDonald, Financial Director at Tranfield added, "Invensys Marcam met all our requirements for a successful solutions partner: Experience in working with growing mid-size manufacturers and depth of expertise in the food industry and regulatory requirements associated.

The Invensys Marcam team clearly understood our business objectives and the unique business dynamics associated with the food industry, including logistics and inventory management pressures".

"Tranfield is a leader in its market and needed a solutions partner that could meet its high expectations for excellence," said Sanjay Razdan, president of Invensys Marcam.

"Our experience working with more than 1,000 global manufacturers in the process and food industry and deep understanding of the complexities of the food industry made Invensys Marcam a natural choice.

They needed a partner to help them better measure and manage their business for success.

We welcome the opportunity to be that partner".

Marcam is leading global solutions providers focused exclusively on process manufacturing.

Building on 20 years of process industry expertise and proven success, Marcam provides process companies with proven solutions that meet the business requirements of their operational-level plants and supply chains.
