On-line TOC measurement using industrial
analyser

The Mettler Toledo Thornton 770MAX multiparameter industrial analyser adds a TOC measurement sensor to offer a compact analyser package suited for make-up water treatment systems

The Mettler Toledo Thornton innovative design combines the performance of the 770MAX multiparameter instrument, smart sensor technology and TOC measurement principles, to offer a compact analyser package suited for makeup water treatment systems The 770MAX is the first multiparameter instrument to include TOC

For many years online TOC analysis has been dominated by large, stand-alone analysers.

In various stages of make-up water treatment, these units are used to accurately detect organic contamination levels.

Although TOC measurement is frequently a critical process variable, the number of measurement points has been limited due to the high cost and complexity of the analysers available-until now! The Thornton introduction of the 5000TOC has turned the concept of a TOC Sensor into reality.

You can now specify or add additional points of TOC measurement very economically.

Using a laboratory style analyser to perform process measurements in industrial environments has many disadvantages.

Compromises in sample line length, analysis time, physical size, industrial integrity and cost of ownership make the traditional TOC analyser ill-suited for process TOC measurement.

The 5000TOC Sensor is designed to correct these short-comings.

Using a proven continuous measurement principle, analysis time is reduced to less than one minute.

Advanced mechanical design reduces the overall size and weight of the sensor, making it simple and easy to mount on a treatment skid or where wall space is limited.

Most analysers do not meet the regulatory requirements for industrial equipment because they were designed for use in a laboratory environment.

The 5000TOC Sensor is designed using a highly resilient non-metallic NEMA 4X enclosure.

The combination of these factors results in a compact, high performance sensor offered at a considerably lower price than an analyser.

The 770MAX multiparameter instrument offers unmatched measurement capability.

Four smart input channels can accept a wide variety of sensors, measuring conductivity, temperature, pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen, pressure, flow and now TOC.

The 770MAX is unique in that it does not require factory pre-configuration.

This means the user is able to mix and match any combination of these Smartsensors including the 5000TOC Sensor.

The770MAX will allow up to two (2) 5000TOC sensors to be connected to any two of the four smart input channels of the 770MAX, leaving two smart channels remaining, plus two pulse input channels for flow sensor inputs.

This capability and flexibility is what makes the 770MAX and 5000TOC sensor package the most powerful and cost effective TOC instrument available.

When a smart sensor is connected to the 770MAX, the instrument identifies what the sensor is and collects all the vital data stored within the smart sensor memory.

This makes setup much less complex and time consuming.

Configuration of measurements is very intuitive, as menu screens step the user through the process.

The TOC sensor platform is designed to revolutionise the way water system fabricators and facility plant engineers look at TOC measurement.

The analyser technologies available today are effective tools, however the high capital and operational cost prohibits users from sampling some very critical areas within their water systems.

There are more unit processes in most pure water treatment systems today and much more automation.

This requires better process control and more points of measurement.

The 5000TOC Sensor can make this happen.

Its design is industrial, and its size compact.

These are characteristics helpful to all users.

In combination with the 770MAX instrument, 5000TOC Sensors cost significantly less to purchase and less to maintain.

The 5000TOC Sensor uses high intensity UV oxidation with differential conductivity measurement.

This technology provides simplicity.

It minimises components and reduces maintenance.

Optimised performance in this design has been proven to be extremely effective in measuring TOC in pure and ultrapure water applications.

Traditional analysers can also be effective.

However they typically have expanded measurement ranges to allow for a broader range of applications.

This typically means the user is paying more for an instrument that is not optimised for the process.

Like all TOC instruments, the 5000TOC Sensor requires a side-stream sample.

However, due to its compact size, it can be located closer to the source and the sample flowrate through the device is only 20 ml/min.

It is designed to work from process streams operating under pressure of up to 100 psi and temperatures to 90C.

The TOC measurement range is 0.1 to 1000 ppb (ug/l).

The combination of technology and performance designed into the 5000TOC sensor package is the latest innovative step in TOC measurement.

It will allow the user the ability to monitor and control organic contamination in a cost effective and efficient manner, making TOC measurement a process parameter that is practical, efficient and no longer cost prohibitive. Request a free brochure from Mettler Toledo ...
