Grange Packaging chooses Safeline metal
detector

Contract packer Grange Packaging and Distribution has replaced its existing metal detectors with Mettler Toledo Safeline R Series Signature detectors, for improved sensitivity and reliability

Positioned over the conveyor, they search for metal particles in packaged chocolate powder prior to shipping "We are required by one of our most important clients to use metal detection in our production process," commented the Grange Packaging QA Manager, Shirley Mercer: "The previous detectors we were using were unable to reach the sensitivity we wanted to achieve

To improve our processing systems and our CCPs a decision was made to change our metal detectors to Mettler Toledo Safeline.

The Safeline R Series Signature detectors have proved very reliable since they were installed last December.

They are extremely sensitive to even the smallest metal particles and give us the peace of mind to know that our packaged products are completely food safe.

They were easy to install on our existing production line with minimal disruption and are also simple to use.

I have also been very pleased with the excellent service and support we have received from Mettler Toledo Safeline".

Metal fragments can enter the product during manufacturing or co-processing and it is essential that any contaminated packs are removed.

Inspecting over 60,000 packs a day, the detectors simply fit over the conveyor, and if a contaminated pack is discovered it is rejected from the line by an air blast.

The R Series Signature can detect the most minute particles of metal, even through several layers of packaging.

It does this through high frequency detection coil technology combined with enhanced filtering techniques.

This provides unparalleled online sensitivity to all metal types, including normally difficult-to-detect non-magnetic stainless steels and non-spherical contaminants like wire, swarf or small slithers of metal.

Through its single-setting operation, the detector can inspect multiple products with different product signals without the need for adjustment or programme changes, a major advantage over similar systems.

Another advantage of the R Series Signature is that the units can work in close proximity to other metal structures and equipment without any interference - ideal for situations where space is very restricted.

This is achieved through the revolutionary Safeline Zero Metal Free Zone (ZMFZ) technology, which generates an internal cancellation in opposition to the primary metal field of the detector.

This inhibits the leak of the magnetic feed, reducing the insertion space required.

Future proofing is an integral part of the detector design.

Their multi-frequency capability allows them to inspect products packaged in both plain and metallised film, while a broad array of connectivity options ensure the R Series Signature range meets future requirements in terms of data capture and management information systems.

Each unit has an in-built performance validation routine in line with the requirements of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) areas, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and all the major food retailers.

It automatically tells the user when scheduled testing is due and guides QA staff through the process step by step.

Mettler Toledo is the world's leading supplier of in-line metal detection, checkweighing and X-ray inspection systems.

Their Safeline metal detector range, which includes the R Series Signature and R Series Profile, is the world leader in product contaminant detection and quality assurance for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Request a free brochure from Mettler Toledo ...
