New 'bulk products' metal detector for food

A Mettler Toledo product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Sep 18, 2007

Mettler Toledo Safeline have developed a version of their renowned R-Series Signature metal detector especially for use on bulk food processing and packaging lines

Called the RB-Series Signature, this latest model is particularly well suited to the metal detection requirements of bulk meat, cheese and granulated product manufacturers and packagers.

Designed to deliver the highest in-line metal detection performance, the RB-Series model will inspect 25 to 50 kilo bulk bags, as well as dry, wet, loose or packed bulk product.

Comments Mettler Toledo Safeline Marketing Manager, Neil Giles: "Our R-Series Signature range is widely accepted as providing the industry standard in terms of reliability, stability and detection sensitivity.

By introducing the RB-Series, we have created a solution purpose-built for the inspection of larger, bulk products.

It is acknowledged that metal detector sensitivity can sometimes be affected where bulk products are inspected using a conventional metal detector, because of increased aperture height to accept large products.

With the introduction of the RB-Series detector, bulk producers no longer have to tolerate any likelihood of a compromise in sensitivity.

With more and more food manufacturers now placing the onus on bulk ingredient producers to ensure the products they supply are contaminant free, now seemed the perfect opportunity to introduce a new model specifically created for bulk products.

The RB-Series Signature uses an advanced coil system and geometry to provide the greater levels of sensitivity that bulk food manufacturers will increasingly require".

Designed for easy integration into bulk processing and packaging lines, the RB-Series Signature model offers:.

* Advanced coil design using the Mettler Toledo Safeline advanced high frequency coil technology, combined with enhanced filtering techniques, which helps established the Signature range reputation for unparalleled on-line sensitivity in a wide range of applications.

With the new RB-Series bulk model, all metal types are detectable, including the normally difficult-to-detect non-magnetic stainless steel and non-spherical contaminants such as wire and swarf.

Operation is via a menu driven interface built on the industry proven Signature platform and when integrated with a conveyor system, bulk product inspection can be fully automated.

Typical detection performance for dry products is better than 1.8mm non-magnetic stainless steel.

Typical improvements of up to 25% can be realised in some wet products compared to existing technology.

RB-Series Signature metal detectors include performance validation software routines in line with the requirements of major retailers, HACCP and GMP.

The metal detector will indicate when testing is due and guide QA staff through the step-by-step process.

RB-Series Signature models are available in a range of sizes, sealing standards and finishes to suit all manufacturing environments.

Sealing standards are available from IP65 for dry, non-aggressive plant conditions through to IP66+ for harsh wash down environments.

Standard case construction and finishes include bead-blasted stainless steel and white painted aluminium.

Other options include:.

* Maximum sensitivity and stability for the inspection of bulk products.

* Detection and system validation function.

* Single and dual frequency options.

* Choice of aperture size, sealing standards and finishes.

* Data collection and network connectivity.

* Optional Attex Cat 2D compliance.

* Aperture sizes: Height - all sizes from 250mm to 400mm in 50mm increments; Width - all sizes from 500mm to 1000mm in 50mm increments.
