TDR radar for 73 palm oil tanks uses
HART
Level measurement of palm oil in 73 tall tanks has been achieved by Nivelco and Perdana, their local agent in Malaysia, using HART data, interfaced to the system using the Nivelco Multicont
Level measurement of palm oil in 18m tall tanks is not an easy task to handle, even with radar systems, because of its low dielectric constant (Er = 1.75) However, Palmaju Sdn Bhd in Malaysia had 73 very tall tanks with palm oil products to store, with the data needing to be passed into the central process control system

Next generation of compact level transmitters
Nivelco level control and measurement products now include capacitance, vibrating rod/fork, and float-operated level switches, plus hydrostatic bore-hole
This was an ideal project for Perdana, the Malaysian Agent for Nivelco to undertake, since they are very experienced system integrators, and the Nivelco TDR (time domain reflection) guided wave radar system offered the best chance of measuring the tank level with a radar system.
Temperature monitoring in the tanks was also required.
The MicroTREK ABM-A16-3 (with factory calibrated +/-5 mm accuracy) units featuring dual cable probe were tested and found absolutely reliable to cater for the level metering across the whole range of the 18m tall vessels, whether containing palm oil or the other fluids used in the production process.
The temperature monitoring was achieved by using Thermocont TTH-512-4.
The level and temperature transmitters were hooked-up on to a Multicont Universal Controller.
The HART data collected by the Multicont PRC-12A-2 was relayed through its RS485 port to the Process Control System of the plant.
Perdana supplied all the interfacing needed for communication while Nivelco took care of measuring level by MicroTREK, temperature by the Thermocont and collecting and communicating the data using the Nivelco Multicont.
