North East Lincolnshire Council has an urgent message for the country's packaging industry - Grimsby, premier food town of Europe, needs you!

North East Lincolnshire Council has an urgent message for the country's packaging industry - Grimsby, premier food town of Europe, needs you There are some 500 food related companies in and around Grimsby all with packaging needs and the council is keen for others to join them

But although the land and premises are also available for packaging companies together with big financial incentives in the form of grants - very few packaging companies have yet moved into the area.

Council economic development officer Andrew Moore and his team are charged with redressing the balance and are mounting a campaign to hammer home the North East Lincolnshire area's attractions.

Whether companies deal in the 'hardware' or 'software' of packaging, the machines or the bits and pieces needed to operate them, there is scope in the area for businesses to set up.

Companies with expertise in film wrapping, flow wrapping, form fill and seal, and thermoforming are all on the council's 'shopping' list.

In fact any and all types of packaging undertaking would be made welcome to join the few, which are already operating highly successfully in the area.

Mr Moore says: ''The council wants to help support the myriad of food companies which have been attracted to the area by offering them support services which are locally based.

By its very nature food needs handling quickly and the food companies in and around Grimsby deserve a local service able to offer that speed.

''What could be better for packaging companies seeking to relocate, or to set up a satellite factory, than to move in to an area where there are already 500 would-be customers, with the council confident that the number will continue to rise.

We are putting up the money which will encourage others to join our booming local food economy''.

There are grants available from Europe, from Westminster and locally to help ease the way for incomers and thanks to the foresight of North East Lincolnshire Council, there is no lack of accommodation land and buildings.

Mr Moore points to an on-going multi-million pound refurbishment project masterminded by the council's economic regeneration unit - the 21st Century Business Space Programme.

Under this scheme several locations are available for new businesses, two of them object lessons in how to overcome the loss of a major business.

Alpine Food Park is the site once operated by the KP company while Grimsby West is the former home of Fisher Frozen Foods.

Both have been given a new lease of life by the go-ahead council to be set alongside Europarc, one of the biggest industrial success stories for decades anywhere in the UK.

To hammer home its 'come and join us' message the council has taken space at some major trade fairs - the European Seafood Expo in Brussels (Hall 9, stand 4029) from May 4-6 and Fishing 2004 in Glasgow (stand H50/G28) from May 20-22.

Now, that's what you call being serious.
