MoD gives UAV imagery intelligence contract to 2d3

Vision science systems developer 2d3 has won GBP150,000 in funding from the Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) to help develop imagery intelligence for UAVs.

The funding is provided through the Centre for Defence Enterprise for research into improved automated imagery analysis.

These new projects are focused on 2d3's Tacitview product, a software suite that can create image intelligence from aerial video.

Tacitview exploits information contained in surveillance images and video to produce actionable intelligence for armed forces.

The company will transform aerial video into large, high-quality photographic maps in both 2D and 3D, making Tacitview interoperable with other intelligence systems.

Production of up-to-the-minute image-based maps to be viewed at varying resolutions is becoming an important part of ground and aerial military operations.

Both 2D and 3D maps indicate recent changes to the layout of buildings and terrain and help ground forces travel more safely through potentially hostile environments.

Modern viewing tools allow the military planner to change from strategic overview to tactical detail of a target with the sweep of a mouse.

At an event held in February, all nine beneficiaries of the MoD funding attended the Centre for Defence Enterprise in Harwell to showcase the new technologies being developed.
