Acoustic wave transmitter technology from Partech Instruments is helping Del Monte to determine the coal levels in the boiler house bunkers at its plant in Kings Lynn The use of two Hawk Sultan transducers means that plant operators can see through dust in the coal bunkers and exercise closer control over the management of coal throughput

The coal fired boilers for process steam production are major contributor to the plant's operational efficiency, making it essential for close control of the volume of coal in the bunkers and management of deliveries.

As coal is pneumatically blown into the bunkers, the dust created has always prevented ultrasonic instruments working within the bunkers from working effectively.

With the Partech Sultan 20kHz models operating at a lower frequency than alternative instruments, the instruments have the ability to look over long distances and the sound wave is reflected only from larger particle sizes.

This means that fine dust is ignored and no false level readings result, thus the filling process can be monitored without any lost echoes.

The Hawk Sultan is an ATEX compliant non-intrusive, acoustic wave transmitter that uses a range of transducer frequencies to suit the requirements of even the most arduous applications.

Capable of measuring up to 60 metres in standard configuration and 120 metres in its long range set up, the Hawk Sultan emits a high powered acoustic pulse that is reflected back from the surface of the material being measured.

At Del Monte the two Sultan transducers are mounted in the top of each 13.5m high bunker, with the remote transmitter located in the boiler house.

The reflected signal is processed using purpose-designed software that includes Bin Mapping for the rejection of false echoes and echoes from structures within the tank.

Apart from the problems of dust and distance, one further issue that had to be overcome was the possibility of a weld line halfway down each of the bunkers, giving false reflections that were not apparent when the bunkers were relatively full.

Using the Hawk Goshawk II software on a PC connected to the transmitters, it was possible to see this false echo and tune it out using the adjustments available on each of the Sultans.

Following the initial installation of the Partech instruments, extended tests using a logging system capable of being monitored remotely were carried out, substantially reducing the need for site visits.

This was particularly important on what is a very slow moving process ie an hour to fill a bunker and days or possibly weeks to empty, depending on the demand for steam.

"The lower frequencies offered in the Hawk Sultan allow us to look at applications that would previously have required high cost radar systems," comments Angus Fosten, Sales and Marketing Director at Partech Instruments.

"Acoustic wave pulse transmission has many advantages over traditional ultrasonic devices, not least of these being its ability to see straight through dust.".
