PACT at Newcastle University offers a two day short course on process plant real time optimisation, taught by some of the UK experts in the industry

It is a simple fact that any process can be optimised: there is always the potential for more effective operation and increased benefits However, the costs and benefits cannot be quantified in a meaningful way without some sort of feel for the type and scope of optimiser required

Also, there is a confusing variety of technology.

Optimisers can be real-time or off-line, steady state or dynamic: they may have large, complex, rigorous models or small simple models, etc.

This 2-day short course focuses on the functionality of real time optimisers (RTO).

It is a part of the 5-day PACT module on Optimisation and Scheduling.

All PACT courses offer independent training: they are neither vendor nor product specific.

The two day short course costs GBP650, which includes course notes, day time meals and refreshments but excludes accommodation and travel.

The following topics are all covered within the two days of the short course.

* Classification of real time optimisers (RTO).

* Steady state optimisers (SSO).

* Models for steady state optimisers.

* Methodology for steady state optimisers.

* Steady state detection.

* Steady state model updating.

* Solution of the SSO problem.

* Dynamic optimising controllers (DOC).

* Constraint handling by DOCs.

* Quadratic programming (QP) solution of the DOC problem.

* Formulation of constraints.

* Application of DOCs.

* Interface between RTO and model predictive controllers (MOPC).

For the two day course, the lecturers involved will be Dr Chris Hawkins, Dr Andrew Trenchard and Jonathan Love.

Chris Hawkins is a research manager within Emerson Process Management with responsibility for performance monitoring and optimisation.

He has a wealth of experience in the design, development and implementation of real time optimisers on process plant.

Andrew Trenchard is a senior engineer with Honeywell Process Solutions.

He is a specialist in advanced process control and optimisation and has extensive experience of project engineering, consulting, training, technical sales and product support.

His current position involves technology planning.

Andy contributes to various other IGDS modules too.

Jonathan Love is Director of the IGDS in Process Automation at Newcastle University and author of the Process Automation Handbook, published by Springer.
