Projen, the award winning project management company based at Northwich, Cheshire, recently promoted the 'European Week of Safety' at a number of key client sites across the UK

This year's European Week of Safety campaign 'Lighten the Load' was dedicated to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), with the aim of the campaign being to support employers, workers, safety representatives and other stakeholders in improving MSD prevention MSDs are the most common form of ill-health disorders at work, both in the UK and across Europe

Work-related MSDs affect 1.0 million people in Great Britain alone each year.

Problems include back pain, work-related neck and upper limb disorders (ULDs), including repetitive strain injuries, and lower limb disorders.

During the European Week of Safety which ran from the 22nd until the 26th of October 2007, Projen provided information including booklets on 'Manual Handling' and 'How to avoid Back Problems' plus posters on correct lifting techniques and a word search quiz.

By raising peoples awareness Projen aimed to achieve better prevention and management of the key factors in reducing MSDs.

The main focus of the promotion was at two of the GlaxoSmithKline sites at Stevenage and Tonbridge, Total Bitumen in Preston and the Greenergy Immingham Biodiesel facility.

Results from the latest survey of self-reported work-related illness indicate that in 2005/06 an estimated prevalence of 1 020 000 people in Great Britain suffered from a musculoskeletal disorder.

That's enough people to fill the new Wembley Stadium 11 times over.

In estimating the cost to employers, the HSE has estimated that work-related musculoskeletal disorders cost between GBP590 million and GBP624 million (1995/96 prices).

John Taylor, Managing Director said "We have instigated a number of our own health and safety schemes over recent years and they are proving extremely popular and successful at promoting the safety message.

When the European Week of Safety was announced we were more than happy to promote and support the scheme as it complimented the work we are doing both with our own staff and contractors on site.

I think the safety week proved very successful and the promotional material supplied was very well received".
