Working in partnership with Sasol, the company has implemented a bespoke 5-year programme designed to deliver an average of 63 months Meantime Between Failure (MTBF) on 3,800 centrifugal pumps at the Sasol Secunda plant.
This will represent an impressive 300% improvement on the original MTBF of the pumps.

Plants are missing major reliability improvements
Oil and gas processing plants around the world could be missing out on the opportunity to boost their levels of reliability and performance by as much as 200% by adopting performance optimization
"As with any other contract we began working with Sasol by carefully identifying specific opportunities for improvement," explains Simon Roberts of Performance Plus.
"We then implemented a 'back to basics' programme which has ensured that all maintenance, handover and commissioning activities are being handled correctly, and at the end of year three, we are already set to exceed our year four target for improvements in availability".
"The approach adopted by Performance Plus fitted perfectly with our programme of standardising our pump equipment requirements so that we can deal with a smaller number of suppliers on a longer-term partnership basis," explains Lionel Prinsloo, a member of the Sasol executive team.
"The objective was to align the business drivers of Sasol and Performance Plus.
This initiative was a very critical initiative in the Sasol Netgain Total Cost of Ownership optimisation project.
We are effectively 'buying' increased reliability on our pumps from Performance Plus, and they only benefit from the contract if Sasol do.
"Working in partnership with Performance Plus in this manner meant that we had to allow them access to potentially sensitive information about the operation of out plant, and that could only be allowed once we had established a firm basis of trust between the two companies.
Now we have achieved that, we are both moving forward in the same direction and will both share in the rewards".
Performance Plus offers bespoke solutions tailored to individual clients, which increase reliability and efficiency, reduce operating costs and minimise total cost of ownership.
Root cause analysis techniques are used to pinpoint problem areas before Performance Plus devises and implements bespoke programmes of reliability and quality procedure improvements and industry best practice activities.
These combine to maximise the performance of existing plant, extend operating life, reduce costs and minimise the total cost of ownership for the client.
These solutions are normally delivered on a consultancy-style risk-reward basis, under which Performance Plus only earns payment after agreed performance improvement targets have been met or exceeded.
This eliminates the need for significant capital investment costs from the client by effectively making the contract risk-free and self-financing.
The success of this initial contract has already prompted discussions to extend the Performance Plus philosophy to other aspects of the Secunda plant, as well as other Sasol facilities in South Africa.
