Preem Refinery Lysekil in Sweden has installed its first surface-mounting flow control substrate in a process analyser station: the modular fittings are from the Parker Instrumentation Intraflow range

The Preem Refinery Lysekil in Sweden (previously known as Scanraff) has installed its first surface-mounting flow control substrate in a process analyser station The modular fittings - from the Parker Instrumentation Intraflow range - allowed Preem Refinery to rapidly install a new flow control system for dewpoint analysis

This field-mounted analyser station monitors the moisture content of propylene gas in the refinery's jetty area, before it is loaded onto tankers for export.

The Intraflow system was assembled to Preem Refinery's requirements and supplied as a ready to use module by Parker's Swedish distributor ITEMS.

Tony Carlsson, Instrument Engineer at Preem Refinery who specified the flow system comments: "This new surface mount technology substantially reduces the space required to assemble analyser stations, as well as the sampling volumes of the system - for more efficient measurement cycles.

The plug-together nature of the Intraflow substrate also greatly simplifies routine maintenance such as the replacement of filters.

That's a task that can now be accomplished in just a few minutes.

It's a very attractive solution and I expect to adopt it on future analyser installations and upgrades".

Roger Wibbling of ITEMS, adds: "No welding is required with this form of modular substrate.

Parker IntraFlow fittings plug together in seconds using novel slip-fit connectors, with finished systems occupying typically just 25% of the space of a conventionally-plumbed alternative".

IntraFlow surface-mount substrate fittings are ISA/ANSI SP76.00.02 compliant.

The 1.5 inch (38.1 mm) footprint modules simply screw onto a 'pegboard' backplane that provides the connection force and rigidity for the finished flow control assembly, and may be disassembled rapidly for maintenance or re-use.

A major advantage of the Intraflow substrate is intrinsic support for three-way flow paths.

Unlike linear substrates in common use for semiconductor 'gas stick' delivery systems, IntraFlow maintains flow paths on a single plane - regardless of direction.

No manifolds on additional substrate layers are needed to implement the more sophisticated functionality required by sample systems.

This approach allows flow control substrates to be constructed with extremely low profiles (less than 3/4inch/20mm including the pegboard), and additionally optimises efficiency in terms of smaller internal volume sizes for faster sampling and purging cycles.
