Solenoid technology extinguishes explosion risk

Patented new explosion proof solenoid coil technology combines the industry requirements of smaller size, low current variants with the current capabilities of much larger, more cumbersome models

Parker Hannifin has patented a new explosion proof solenoid coil technology that combines the industry requirements of smaller size, low current variants with the current capabilities of much larger, more cumbersome models.

The new design also meets the ATEX standard degree of protection EEx dm IIC T4, T5 and T6.

Developed by Parker engineers in Geneva, the new coils replace the wide variety of big, heavy, old-fashioned EExd and EExm coils.

The ignition volume in the connection box has been reduced to less than 10cm3 so, in case of a spark, an explosion is much less probable.

However, if one does occur, it will only generate very low pressure and will extinguish immediately.

Additionally, the use of an integrated current fuse, thermal fuse and suppression varistor increase safety, reduce problems with installation and remove the need for expensive explosion proof cable entries.

The new design utilises polyamide plastic housings, integrated seals and O-rings that provide ingress protection to IP67 as standard.

This revolutionary design and use of advanced materials greatly reduces the cost of the coil when compared with traditional coil designs.

Parker can now equip most Lucifer models with this new technology, and for certain versions a specific range has been developed; in particular for the low power (2.5w) range and the booster 'intrinsically safe' version EEx ia IIC T6 with line check capability.

With this breakthrough, no only has the company developed a product that meets the needs of its customers, but it has also managed to incorporate many advanced features while keeping the solenoid and valve combinations cost competitive.
