That is the intriguing question posed in the February/ March issue of Read-out, Ireland's journal of instrumentation, control and automation

Eoin O'Riain, the editor, contends that the activity in the automation sector in Ireland points to a vibrant rather than a depressed market He quotes the MD of international consultants Frost and Sullivan, "With phrases such as 'darkening outlook,' 'market freeze' and 'economic meltdown' dominating the financial headlines, companies are electing to implement a cautious approach"

He is of course talking primarily about the US Economy but even there he sees "The problem is a spiral effect driven by fear!" This is his excellent advice: "Companies need to take advantage of business opportunities and fight their instinct to freeze or even cutback their growth strategies during times of economic uncertainty.

By viewing the business landscape as ripe with opportunity as opposed to plagued by certain economic failure, CEOs wield the power to secure future successes".

This latest issue of Read-out also features more optimism, reporting the projection from ARC Advisory Services that robust growth is ahead for the automation systems market in the process industries.

The current issue covers the test, measurement and calibration sectors.

Robin Woods, of Transtest discusses accredited and non accredited calibration, examining what is available and what to look for when calibrating.

The issue is filled with information on products, events, applications and people.

It salutes the retirement of the Endress+Hauser chief in Ireland, Rudi Wolf, after many decades in the industry.

This issue also reminds readers about the forthcoming annual ISA Ireland Exhibition of Instrumentation and Control due to be held in Cork on 22nd April 2008, at the Rochestown Park Hotel, Douglas, Cork.
