RDP Electronics has recently assisted Southampton-based BKAutomation in the design of a two-station assembly and proofing machine for a client in the automotive industry The machine produces five versions of high-pressure oil pipe assembly used in turbochargers and relies on highly accurate measurements to achieve what the Japanese refer to as "Poke-Yoke" or to "avoid inadvertent mistakes"

Capacitive technique for rotary displacement
The RCDT rotary displacement sensor provides a high accuracy, no friction solution to accurate rotational measurement of a shaft, through application of patented capacitive, non-contact techniques
The oil pipes pass through various stages of assembly and proofing, and the RDP D5/100AG gauging LVDT transducers measure bolt positions and assembly dimensions, ensuring, for example, that only one washer has been assembled in place, not two.
Outputs from the LVDTS are amplified by the RDP S7AC, which send a 0-10V analogue signal to a PLC preset with pass/fail limits.
"Pick and place" robotics transfer the assembly between stations of the machine, rejecting any that don1t reach the required standard.
