With more than 40 years of pre-eminence in the food processing sector, there has been a change at the helm of the UK arm of Reiser, with Ken Mossford taking over as managing director of the Milton Keynes-based company But little else will change with Reiser's philosophy of providing top quality service coupled with high quality products its customers can trust

The success of a company which burst on to the European scene after its successful formation on the other side of the Atlantic - with corporate headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts, US and sales offices in Ontario, Canada, as well as Milton Keynes - has been based to a large extent on the Vemag line of continuous vacuum fillers which were first produced in 1954 in Germany.

Sales of Vemags have been so successful that Reiser bought the company last year in order to better coordinate R and D and application development efforts, as well as ensure the best possible distribution of products.

With its purchase, Vemag was set alongside Ross Industries, whose operations in the US became part of the Reiser operation in 1991.

Now Reiser and its affiliates have over 600 employees around the globe serving the needs of food processors and packers in more than 70 countries.

But through it all, Reiser has remained true to its twin mantras of service and trust.

And Ken Mossford is not about to change anything that has served Reiser (UK) Ltd so well for so many years.

"We set out to serve the food industry and other selected markets by selling and supporting equipment which provided the solutions our customers needed," he said.

"We have maintained this philosophy, together with one which seeks continual improvement of customer relationships and we will continue to abide by these philosophies.

They have served the company well for over four decades during which our customer base has grown a pace, so we must be getting something right." Innovation has been one of the hallmarks of Reiser's rise to success.

The company's research and development unit is dedicated to the search for state-of-the-art solutions to solve food processing and packaging problems.

Reiser has a wide range of machines and attachments, which are available off the peg, however if the challenge warrants Reiser's R and D experts can customize a solution.

From an individual unit for a single process to a fully integrated processing and production line, Reiser has the expertise and commitment to its customers to ensure that expectations and ultimately applications are met.

For years the core of the company's success has been the acceptance of Reiser equipment by the meat, poultry and fish processors across the UK.

However, more recently Reiser equipment has been used to excellent advantage in the bakery and snack food segments of the UK's food chain.

Specifically, bakeries large and small are benefiting from the technology Vemag machines bring with them.

The Vemag's unique double screw technology offers gentle, accurate product portioning with even the most viscous of doughs.

With an ever-expanding series of interchangeable attachments, the same machine can act as a depositor or filler, divider or sheeter, former or extruder.

Easily deposit apple fillings, muffin batters, cookies, and pie doughs or deposit onto a multiple lane portioning system all with the same system.

Their versatility is unmatched.

Mr Mossford and his team are already seeing the benefits of their decision to go all out to attract bakery business.

"We have been supplying bakeries for a number of years," he says.

"But with a general trend by bakeries towards greater automation, we believe the time is right to target this sector.

Building on our many years of experience we understand the challenges a busy baker faces including the on-going demand for higher output, greater weight accuracy and ultimately better product integrity.

Reiser has worked with numerous bakeries to automate their production, whilst never comprising the quality of the finished item.

"Vemag machines have been meeting these demands for many years and we believe that the time is right to let even more bakeries know about the benefits of the Vemag range.

This includes versatility and dependability, which when coupled together has to be a winning combination." Another growth industry for Reiser equipment is fish.

Its Supervac vacuum packaging machines have recently proved a resounding success with Scottish producers Farne Salmon and Trout Ltd.

The machine was installed to reduce the amount of waste they had been experiencing when turning out large 400g packs of smoked salmon.

While conventional packaging tends to experience an attack of the 'bends' because of the size of the container resulting in as much as 12% of production leaking away, use of the Supervac has cut wastage to just about zero.

Still remaining its biggest success, Reiser continues its long history of selling and servicing to the meat processing industry.

Whether it is Vemag equipment for sausage production or Ross Inpack Tray Sealers for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), Reiser will continue its commitment to its customers.

This includes after sales support, as well as continued research and development programmes to ensure its products keep pace with technological developments and the changing needs of the food processing industry - and the company seems to be well on track for another 40 years and more.

Add to all this Reiser's commitment to after sales support, its research and development programme, buyers can be assured that its products will keep pace with technological developments - and the changing needs of the food processing industry.

Given this pledge, the company seems to be well on track for another 40 years and more.
