Simulation software helps confirm baggage handling
Geo Robson used the latest 3d Simulation software to secure GBP1M project for a baggage handling system: performing without jams at peak times has always been a drawn out process of trial and error
Won competitively as two orders worth more than GBP0.75m in total, the work included conveyors for 14 additional check-in positions complemented by extra airside capacity for automatic security screening and sorting of bags.
As well as the check-in conveyors, which are built to a standard Robson design proven at airports worldwide, the company was responsible for all the controls and software, working in collaboration with Birmingham International Airport (BIA).
The check-ins feed a series of collector conveyors offering numerous routing options.
The second BIA job expands the existing Terminal 2 airside manual sortation system and involved Robson working with the airport on a new Hold Baggage Screening (HBS) line and an additional make-up carousel complete with controls and software.
The HBS system uses new multi-view technology to improve screening sensitivity and is the first of its kind to be installed at Birmingham International.
The competitively won contract at Heathrow, where Robson have worked for almost 25 years, was in Terminal 3.
It supplied baggage systems integrator and principal contractor Alstec with all the conveyor equipment necessary to bring the airside baggage system up to current Health and Safety standards and to improve routing options and throughputs.
Valued at GBP250,000 to date, manufacturing and installation was completed in phases in line with a co-ordinated fast-track programme.
Equipment included the Series 3 airport conveyor, developed by Robson to suit the comprehensive performance standards set by BAA, the Heathrow owner, as well as ball tables, roller-tracks, chutes and special electro/mechanical support fabrications.
