Geo Robson and Co has recently completed a twelve-month, GBP1.3m programme expanding the baggage handling at Manchester Airport.

Part of the contract took the company into its fifth year of involvement with the Terminal 2 departures baggage hall, which it completely redeveloped between 2001 and 2004.

On this occasion Geo Robson added a third line for Level 1 Hold Baggage Screening based around a 'new generation' X-ray machine - with associated pusher unit, and entry and exit conveyors.

The work required modification of the mezzanine floor to support the X-ray machine which, because of space restrictions, had to be raised into position from a screened lifting well in the public arrivals baggage hall beneath.

In Terminal 3 at the Airport, Robson has increased the capacity of the system 1 check-in island and modified the downstream baggage handling system to accommodate it.

At check-in, this involved raising the number of desks from 20 to 25 and increasing the speed of the two collecting conveyors serving them to achieve the necessary higher throughput.

On the airside of the system, the most significant of the additions and modifications - and the largest part of the whole contract - was the widening of the existing make-up carousel (from which bags are collected for transfer to the appropriate aircraft) and the extension of the building housing it.

This new arrangement makes maximum use of the widened carousel by giving staff access to it from both sides.

Robson was responsible for all civil aspects of the building literally from floor to roof, including a new internal roadway for baggage carts and even the relocation of an aircraft docking sign.
