PowerFlex drive adds logic to low power applications Demand is increasing for intelligent variable speed drives that can perform basic logic functions - features provided by the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 40 AC drive from Rockwell Automation

Suitable for applications up to 7.5 kW, the PowerFlex 40 features sensorless vector control to meet low speed torque demands - and offers machine designers and OEMs a cost effective and flexible alternative to installing both a drive and logic controller.

Ideal for low power applications such as incline conveyors, extruders and constant torque pumps, the Allen-Bradley drive is equipped with configurable I/O and includes step logic, basic logic, timer and counter functions.

These integrated features help to reduce both wiring and hardware costs by removing the need for a separate micro controller.

Step Logic is the ability to step through up to eight preset speeds based on programmed logic.

Each step can be individually configured using three parameters: logic, speed reference and time - although for more complex projects the step time value and basic logic can be used together.

Suitable for repetitive machine cycles that use simple Boolean logic and sequencing, such as incline conveyors, extruders and guillotines - the drive 's Step Logic function provides precise control in an easy-to-use, compact package.

The programmed logic can include user-defined conditions that need to be met before stepping from one preset speed to another.

Depending on the application the PowerFlex drive additional basic logic, timer and counter functions provide extra programming options, such as altering the output when a certain time has passed or after the desired number of counts.

Programming is simple using an integral keypad, which can store the 10 most commonly programmed parameters to reduce start up times.

An internal RS485 port also allows programming via a PC using Allen-Bradley DriveExplorer and DriveExecutive configuration and monitoring software.

With logic increasingly appearing in Micro drives, the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 40 is the perfect solution for smaller installations that would otherwise require a separate logic controller.

As a simple-to-use standalone unit it not only helps reduce system costs but also provides enhanced performance and increased flexibility. Request a free brochure from Rockwell Automation ...
