Linear motion system for precision heat treatment

A RA Rodriguez (UK) product story

The IEF Werner 2-axis linear motion system, supplied and supported by RA Rodriguez has cut application time and costs in applying a carburising inhibitor to shafts and gears

The application of a carburising inhibitor to shafts and gears at a second tier automotive supplier is an important one.

Brushed-on in liquid form before heat treatment, CarboStop keeps the coated area soft and suitable for welding or secondary machining after hardening.

Knowing where to put the coating is a skilled task.

Its application has always been a manual job but not only was this proving time-consuming and messy, it was also relatively wasteful and therefore uneconomic.

Could automation provide a solution? The resultant IEF Werner 2-axis linear motion system, supplied and supported by RA Rodriguez has indeed been highly successful in cutting application time and costs whilst enhancing process quality and the working environment.

Equipped with interchangeable tooling for processing a range of parts, this free-standing, bespoke machine is driven in both horizontal and vertical axes by stepper motors.

Parts are manually loaded and unloaded but the remainder of the cycle is fully automatic - light guards ensure easy operator access to minimise cycle time.

The blue-coloured CarboStop is delivered precisely via a 2-position dosing nozzle from a secure 5-litre reservoir onto the part that rotates at a constant speed.

The system can apply the liquid material around a radius or chamfer and is fully programmable to ensure optimum coating of a variety of gears and shafts.

Time and cost savings have been sufficiently high to ensure an early payback on this machine.
