Platon units, manufactured by Roxspur Measurement and Control in the UK, are approved for this duty by the LPCB, the Loss Prevention Certification Board, under their "Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations" in the UK, and by many equivalent organisations in other countries.
Typically, fire sprinkler systems installed in public buildings such as shopping malls, restaurants, theatres and airport terminals need to operate according to such rules, to validate their insurance and ensure their public safety responsibilities.
A recent major contract won by Roxspur involves the supply of Platon LPCB Shunt Orifice flowmeters to the new Terminal 3 at Changi Airport in Singapore, due to open in 2008.
This will become the prestige terminal for Singapore Airlines operations.
Over the last ten years the boom in construction in South East Asia has led to many similar contracts for Platon Fire Sprinkler monitoring systems, since local regulations follow the LPCB guidelines, and planning or building consents require the testing of the fire system performance on a regular basis.
Recently Roxspur has enhanced the capability and ease of installation of these units, by introducing meters which couple to the fire main using Victaulic grooved connections rather than fitting the unit between pipe flanges welded into the pipework.
The main indicator for the flowmeter is a conventional glass tube and float combination, which is marked to identify the LPCB Approval and calibrated to show the flow in the Fire Main, although the actual flow through the glass tube is a bypass around the orifice, known as a "shunt".
This is why the unit is known as an LPCB Approved "Shunt Orifice Flowmeter".
Industrial versions of the shunt orifice meter are also produced, that provide simple local indication of the flow rate in a large line, for either liquids or gases, without any requirement for a power supply.
