The Viking I set a new standard for speed in distributed control systems with the ability to solve 100 PID loops in 100 msec.
Not only was this speed impressive in 1995, it remains impressive today in comparison to most distributed control and safety systems.
In 2003, with the introduction of the RTP 2300, RTP superseded the Viking I with the much faster Viking II controller.

The Viking II, based on an Intel Celeron processor, achieved orders of magnitude improvement over even the Viking I.
The Viking II is capable of 500 PID loops including I/O scan and host communications in 10 msec.
This same Viking II controller became the basis of the RTP 2500 TUV approved critical control and safety system.
While the scan of the 2500 is slowed to allow implementation of windowed watchdog timers, at 25 msec, it is still the fastest safety system on the market today.
Now the Viking III controller will become the new industry standard for high speed data acquisition and control.
Based on the Intel Celeron processor, like its predecessor, the Viking III will significantly improve the speed of execution of floating point calculations, such as PID controls, fuzzy logic, and advanced C++ algorithms, support for all of which are included in the RTP NetSuite software package.
When applying the 2500 Critical Control and Safety System, the Viking III will give the user the option of selecting a fixed scan time of 15 msec or 25msec as opposed to the fixed 25 msec scan available with the Viking II.
ARC analyst, Maurice Wilkins commented: "The Viking III controller will improve the processing speed of a DCS that is already faster than most PLCs.
RTP has already set new paradigms for critical control and safety systems with the RTP 2300 and 2500 control systems.
The addition of the Viking III controller consolidates this paradigm shift.
End users will now benefit not only from the security and availability of the RTP 2300 and 2500 control systems, but also from the improved performance offered by the Viking III controller".
WHAT SPEED MEANS TO THE END USER.
The benefits of high speed processing are apparent when the applications require fast response such as the control of rotating machinery or exothermic reactions.
While less obvious, the implications of higher speed processing are actually important in all applications.
For instance, advanced process control applications are often added as off-line advisors to standard control systems.
While there are sometimes other reasons for the addition of advanced process control, it is often employed to make up for the inability of the distributed control system to control the process in real time.
The Viking III controller will reduce or eliminate the need for advanced process control in these situations.
