The fifth expansion project at the Saudi Methanol Company (Ar-Razi) in Jubail city went on-stream on 1 May, making this SABIC affiliate the world's largest single chemical methanol production complex

Ar-Razi currently produces over 3 million tons of products a year from its existing four plants Ar-Razi - 5 is one of the largest methanol projects in the world with a designed annual capacity of 1.7 million metric tons

The new plant will add about 1,500 metric tons a day to the Ar-Razi capacity, with a capability of increasing production up to 5,000 metric tons a day.

Sabic is the world's second largest producer of methanol.

Yousef bin Abdul Rahman Al-Zamel, Sabic Vice President, Basic Chemicals, said, "The demand for methanol is growing rapidly, especially in the new fuel applications such as DME and biodiesel".

Ar-Razi was founded in 1979 as a 50-50 joint venture between Sabic and the Japanese Saudi Methanol Company, a consortium of major Japanese companies led by Mitsubishi Chemical Gas Company.
