BeCOMS (Bearing Condition Online Monitoring System) is a revolutionary new monitoring and protection system for monitoring of all slide bearings in diesel engines, pumps, turbines and transmissions

BeCOMS (Bearing Condition Online Monitoring System) is the trade name for a revolutionary and new monitoring and protection system, monitoring all slide bearings (main bearing, connecting rod bearings) and protecting the other sliding metallic surfaces in diesel engines in the earliest stage of failure appearance This applies also to pumps, turbines and transmission applications

The measurement principle is based on the generation of thermo-electric voltage caused by friction of moving engine components consisting of different metals or alloys.

The thermo-electric voltage is detected by only one sensor per engine. This sensor is mounted at the free end of the engine or generator crankshaft outside of the crankcase.

The following data are recorded: thermo-electric voltage as function of wear generated by friction, angular velocity of the crankshaft and number of revolutions.

The ultimate goal of the BeCOMS is to protect the crankshaft and associated main rotating and oscillating components from damage (and consequential disaster) prior to the earliest appearance of failures.

As a consequence, replacement of the crankshaft itself becomes unnecessary, and according expenses in the magnitude of millions of dollars will be saved.

More than 120 existing installations on Diesel engines of different manufacturers, used in power generation worldwide, have proven the reliable operation of the BeCOMS system.

Additional to numerous well documented damage preventions of bearings, there are also several recorded and documented cases of detection of failing parts, which are not related to the crankshaft directly, such as.

* Detection of high friction against the housing in a failing turbo charger due to loose locknut of the rotor.

* Detection of high friction of the connecting rod bearing due to a broken exhaust valve.

* Detecting of high friction in cylinder liners due to failing lubrication.

* Detection of connecting rod and camshaft bearings.

Benefits of the BECOMS System for Diesel engine operators.

* On-line and continuous monitoring of the engine condition.

* Early and reliable detection of operation irregularities; even in case engine components have not yet failed.

* An engine shut down for inspection or maintenance can be scheduled in a timely way.

* No unnecessary physical inspection of bearings.

* In case of a bearing failure, BeCOMS is capable not only to identify the compartment but also to pinpoint the specific bearing.

* Stay in very long service without any maintenance necessary.

* Simple installation outside of the crankcase.

Retrofitting an installed engine can be done within a few hours.

No modification of engine parts are necessary.

* Monitoring of the quality and quality deterioration of the lubrication oil by solid particles and water.

* Maximizing the availability and reliability of the engines.

* Minimizing the overall maintenance and operational cost.
