Impact melt pressure sensor for
extrusion machines
SensorsOne announces a new innovative development from Gefran, the Impact Melt Pressure Sensor, which is well able to withstand the mould temperatures in plastic extrusion machines
SensorsOne announces a new innovative development from Gefran which is the Impact Melt Pressure Sensor The Impact has no mercury or oil filling, the fluids that are typically used to fill the capillaries of traditional melt pressure sensors to isolate the sensing element - which typically cannot operate at the very high process temperatures used in plastic extrusion machines

The Impact incorporates a Silicon on Insulator (SOI) strain gauge sensing element which can withstand such very high temperatures without any need for capillary isolation - which degrades the accuracy, stability and sensitivity of the sensing element.
The SOI chip is positioned directly behind a process contact membrane which exploits the high stability qualities of silicon strain gauge technology to provide a more stable reading requiring less re-calibrations over time.
The very high gauge factor properties of the SOI pressure sensor chip have made it possible to use a process contact membrane that is 15x thicker than the ones used in traditional plastic melt pressure sensors and thus offers much greater abrasion resistance with a much more robust mechanical design, extending the operating life of the sensor.
The Impact can work with process temperatures up to 350C in direct contact with the contact membrane and achieves a total error band of better than +/-2.5% of full scale over a wide process temperature range of +20 to +350C.
The Impact is available as a melt pressure transmitter with 4-20mA current output, or as a melt pressure transducer with 5V or 10V amplified voltage output.
The Impact offers a major improvement in performance for users of plastic extrusion moulding machines with a longer life for their sensors and improved accuracy and stability of process measurements.
