Sensonics has announced plans to update its long established Sentry Overspeed Protection System designed to deal with turbine overspeed problems and trip failures in the power generation industry.

With much experience in the predictive maintenance marketplace, Sensonics was recently asked to supply a special small package functional safety system for a customer and it was this request that accelerated Sensonics plans to design a more compact Overspeed Protection System.

The new system has been re-packaged into a single 3U Sentry rack of 6 modules, incorporating 3 Sentry speed/overspeed monitor modules, a 2 out of 3 voting module trip defeat and half speed trip facilities and 2 power supply modules which together offer dual redundancy; one PSU can be swapped out if faulty, with a spare, whilst the system is still running from the other PSU.

The new system is not only much more compact but also comes at a lower cost, maximizes space, provides extra integration of the system and is supplied as one package to IEC 61508 with SIL rating of Level 3.

Applications will be found in conjunction with main turbine boiler feed pumps, gas turbines, diesel engines and turbine driven compressors where systems failure of the proportional control loop can cause rapid speed increases resulting in machine damage.

Sensonics have been prominent in the design, installation and commissioning of monitoring protection for powerplant equipment since 1978.
