Three Severn Trent Services offices and a wastewater treatment facility operated by the company have received an international health and safety accolade from the British Safety Council, one of the world's leading occupational safety, health and environmental organizations In the United States, facilities receiving the award were the Severn Trent Services sales and manufacturing office located in Colmar, with more than 100 employees; and the Glen Cove, Wastewater Treatment Works, a treatment plant operated by the company in New York State

In the United Kingdom, award winners were the Severn Trent Services sales and manufacturing office in Minworth, which employs 84 people; and Integra Utility Services in Derby, a meter installation division of Severn Trent Services, which employs 192 people.

Also receiving recognition was the Strensham Water Treatment Works in the UK operated by Severn Trent Water.

Each facility won the coveted Five Star Health and Safety Audit Award following a rigorous inspection.

The audit can help organizations reduce accidents and improve productivity by identifying their health and safety strengths and weaknesses.

It is estimated that long-term illness or disability-related workplace health and safety issues cost US and UK industry tens of billions of dollars in lost productivity annually.

Following a comprehensive safety evaluation from world-class auditors, organizations are given star ratings from one to five to indicate the effectiveness of their safety programmes.

Action plans are provided to help companies reduce their insurance premiums and continually improve their programmes.

The awards presentation was held on 29 June on the HQS Wellington, a World War II-era British war ship.

"A positive company image through first-class health and safety is vital," said Sir Frank Davies, former chairman of the British Safety Council: "It not only makes excellent business sense to have the safest workplace possible, but it also boosts the morale of employees.

I hope other companies will take the lead from Severn Trent Services and forge the way towards a safer future".
