Severn Trent Services has been selected to supply 46 ClorTec on-site Sodium Hypochlorite generating systems to Abu Dhabi Water and Electric Authority. to replace chlorine gas disinfection

The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), the water and electricity supplier for the largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates, has awarded a contract for replacement of gas chlorination systems by sodium hypochlorite generators at various pumping stations in Abu Dhabi Emirate to Deutsche Babcock Energie und Umwelttechnik The gas chlorination systems, which provide disinfection for the ADWEA potable water, will be replaced by 46 ClorTec on-site sodium hypochlorite generating systems from Severn Trent Services

The systems will be installed at 23 water treatment and pumping station sites, which are operated by the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Dispatch Company, the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company and the Al Ain Distribution Company.

The contract represents phase two of the replacement of chlorine gas as the ADWEA potable water disinfection method.

Phase one, which was completed in August 2006, involved the supply, installation and commissioning of 20 ClorTec on-site sodium hypochlorite generating systems at 10 sites.

The 46 sodium hypochlorite generating systems for Phase II, will be installed over the next two years at 23 sites that either produce or handle the potable water, that has been produced by desalination.

The systems range in output capacity from 36 to 4,800 pounds per day (16 to 217 kg/day) of chlorine equivalent and generate a 0.8 percent sodium hypochlorite solution using three common consumables: salt, water and electricity.

Since the ClorTec units produce sodium hypochlorite on demand, the technology alleviates the problem of chlorate by-product generation that typically results from the storage of bulk sodium hypochlorite.

The system also eliminates the potential risks associated with transporting chlorine gas, as well as storing it on-site at the plants.

According to Marwan Nesicolaci, vice president of international sales and business development for Severn Trent Services, "The ClorTec systems supplied for phase one of the Abu Dhabi Emirate project met or surpassed all operational criteria for the consumption of salt and electricity as well as the quality of the sodium hypochlorite produced.

When the phase two systems are in place, Severn Trent Services will have the largest installed base of sodium hypochlorite generating systems in both the Middle East and the United States, which underscores our historic leadership in this industry".
