The advantage of the modular layout is that systems can be created to cover almost any requirement, whether it's a biscuit manufacturer that needs to process a product carpet in trays or a pharmaceutical producer that requires an automated in-line attachment of an in-feed chain to a pillow pack machine.
As well as for new installations, the new platform has been designed to allow retrofitting of existing packaging lines with the minimum of expenditure and time.
Until now, robots have been fixed in so-called "cells" that were installed above the product and container transportation systems.
The disadvantage of this configuration is that these cells have to be adapted to the width and design of the transportation systems.
The urgent demand for a universal, more flexible, construction has seen the SIG Delta Robots use a column-type suspension, which allows the operator to position them for the most efficient operation of the desired pick and place strategy.
To withstand the high-speed oscillatory movements used by the robots, SIG has introduced special mineral castings, which consist of a mix of minerals and bonding materials based on epoxy resins.
With vibration damping up to 15 times that of steel or grey cast iron, it is only the introduction of these castings that has enabled the more flexible construction, and therefore the column-type suspension, to be developed.
A further advantage over other materials is an easy to clean, chemically inert surface, which prevents corrosion and provides a robust wash-down unit to help satisfy the most stringent hygiene requirements.
Input from an industrial design team has also eliminated many horizontal surfaces and given greater floor clearance to reduce cleaning to a minimum.
As an ingenious finishing touch, an anti-microbial protective layer is permanently bound to the mineral castings to prevent the spread or growth of micro-organisms.
The mineral casting also allows an almost infinite choice of form and colour to provide an attractive design without the extra cost of any finishing work.
With the increasing awareness in the foods, pharmaceuticals and chemical industries, combined with the significant cost savings achieved by the reduction to a modular assembly system, SIG Pack Systems has also taken the step of making the Delta Robots compliant with IP 65 and NEMA 4X as standard.
Optimum accessibility and visibility is provided through large-scale safety doors and the separation of each individual robot working area offers maximum safety and system availability.
