Leading US cookie manufacturer, Vista Baking, needed greater flexibility in the choice of packaging styles, together with a product-friendly system and quick changeover times As a result, the baker turned to SIG Pack Systems and, specifically, its SIGWTS tray loaders to help meet these demands

The market demands placed on FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) manufacturers are continuously changing and present the packaging industry with new challenges.

Vista Baking, one of the top five suppliers in the cookies and snacks industry in North America, is no exception to this rule.

Until recently, its delicate, cream-filled cookies have been manually packed into trays, but, in order to reduce costs and maintain its competitiveness in the market, it was decided to automate its tray loading process.

The new tray loading system had to offer a high throughput, high flexibility of packaging style, gentle product handling and handle a wide range of products.

The system chosen, from SIG Pack Systems, incorporates two SIGWTS tray loaders, which directly accept the full production capacity and fill the waiting trays with the necessary portions.

The filled trays are then passed on to the secondary packaging.

Vista Baking produces 3200 cream-filled cookies a minute, which are processed by two Peters PT2 Creamers.

The products are still warm, and the filling still soft, when they are transferred from the baking process to the packaging line and the SIGWTS tray loaders.

The cookies are portioned and then carefully placed into trays without the application of any pressure, to avoid any misshaping or damage to the very delicate products.

This is made possible by the unique counting wheel technology from SIG, in which each individual cookie is placed into the wheel of the tray loader separately and then portioned off.

In order to slow down the incoming cookies, the number of lanes is multiplied from two to four.

This eases the handling of the cookies and ensures the highest efficiency, at a speed of 1600 products a minute per SIGWTS tray loader.

The cookies are taken individually from the lanes by the counting wheel of the tray loader, placed in an upright position without pressure and then grouped into portions by a pusher system.

A tray denester ensures there is always a tray positioned under the portions, so that the products can be packed carefully with the aid of a distributing device.

As the gentle product handling facilitates direct connection to the production process, the cooling process, which is especially necessary for sandwich products, can be avoided to speed up production.

Furthermore, as the SIGWTS is connected directly to the discharge chain of the creamer, the system saves on both line costs and space.

Ten different formats are now processed on the new packaging line at Vista Baking.

Round and square cookies are filled into their own respective tray sizes.

Conversions can be made to accommodate new shapes and sizes within 15 minutes, without changing any parts.

By pre-selecting different tolerance classes via a touch screen, the SIGWTS tray loaders open up the possibility of converting to different product tolerances.

The number of products in the tray is adjusted accordingly to maintain the weight level.

This ensures that the packaging line efficiency and overall system efficiency are maintained at the very highest level.
