Siemens Automation and Drives is launching a powerful new fail-safe CPU for its Simatic-S7 300 controllers, suitable for use in safety-critical applications conforming to Categories 1 to 4 (EN 954-1) or SIL 1 to 3 (IEC 61508) Designated the 317F-2 DP, the CPU is a high-end unit that complements the existing range of programmable safety controllers

For machine builders who need automation control and a means of controlling safety-critical operations, this CPU is ideal because all programming is carried out in one language - Step 7 - with no need for a separate safety controller or software package.

This translates into significant savings in both hardware and software costs.

Fail-safe programs can be assembled in the conventional Step 7 ladder diagram or control system flowchart languages supplemented by proven, certified Distributed Safety function blocks.

Both automation control functions and safety control functions can operate in parallel, with communication via the Profibus and Profisafe protocols, respectively.

Typical applications will range from burner control to the control of presses and papermaking machinery.

With the addition of the CPU 317F-2 DP to its 151F, 315F and 416F fail-safe controllers, Siemens believes that it now offers the most comprehensive range of fail-safe controllers on the market.

Considering the ease with which a Profisafe fail-safe fieldbus can be implemented - especially if a Profibus network is already in place - the programmable control of safety functions has never been more attractive.

Alongside the CPU 317F-2 DP fail-safe controller, Siemens is also launching the CPU 317-2 DP that is similar but without the fail-safe capability.

Other models feature alternative focused functionality, such as the CPU 317-2 PN/DP that benefits from an Ethernet/Profinet interface in place of the combination DP/MPI interface of the 317-2 DP, and the CPU 317T-2 DP that can be used for both automation and motion control.
