Siemens Automation and Drives has launched new software which allows the integration of RFID (radio frequency identification) systems into business processes The Simatic RF-Manager manages read/write devices, collects and compresses RFID data and makes them available to the merchandise information system

The Simatic RF-Manager has been designed to handle a range of logistics and distribution applications - from the identification of individual products to the automatic recording of entire flows of goods.

The new software manages read/write devices (readers), collects the data these supply to the tags (data carriers), and compresses the data to the accuracy and volume required by the merchandise information system.

In addition, every individual tag can be accessed for reading or writing data or EPC-compliant product identifiers.

The user interface of the Simatic RF-Manager with its clear graphical editors offers all the necessary tools for parameterising the entire RFID system, such as wizard-prompted configuring of the read/write devices, and plant configuration.

The readers can be finely tuned during start-up and operation with refined dialogues and a powerful messaging system.

For the operational phase, the new software has functions for efficient processing of mass data in order to selectively supply the merchandise information system with the desired information.

For example, multiple recording of RFID data carriers is automatically detected and filter algorithms reduce the volume of data.

This avoids incorrect postings or costly corrections in the merchandise information system.

For vertically integrated solutions, the Simatic RF-Manager is integrated with the Siemens Manufacturing Execution System, Simatic IT.

This allows the RFID data to be converted to business-related information and used for controlling the business processes.
