Light curtains with Profisafe interface
Siemens Automation and Drives has now fitted the 3SF7844 light curtains from the Simatic-FS420I family with an integrated Profisafe interface unit, to enable fail-safe communication
The Profisafe interface enables comprehensive diagnostics via Profibus and automation parameter matching With a data transmission rate of up to 12 megabits per second, secure cyclical as well as acyclical data traffic via Profibus DP is supported

Safety controller suits Category 4 applications
Siemens has a powerful new fail-safe CPU for its Simatic-S7 300 controllers, suitable for use in safety-critical applications conforming to Categories 1 to 4 (EN 954-1) or SIL 1 to 3 (IEC 61508)
This means that fast safety-relevant real-time data, as well as extensive diagnostics data, can be exchanged with the programmable logic controller, whilst the self-parameterization function shortens the downtimes when a device has to be replaced.
There are versions with resolutions of 14, 30 and 50 millimeters and protection field heights of 150 to 3000 millimeters.
The test signal, start/restart inhibit, contactor monitoring, blanking, muting and cycle control functions have already been integrated.
The functions are adapted individually, either by means of six internal switches or via the optical interface of the receiver, ie per teach-in or with the help of the user-friendly diagnostic and parameterising software, SafetyLab.
Integration of the system in the automation solution is carried out by means of Step 7 function blocks.
With SIL 3 (Safety Integrity Level) and Category 4 in accordance with EN 954-1, Profisafe meets the high safety requirements for the process and manufacturing industry.
Typical applications would be to protect equipment such as presses, stamping machines, coilers, cutting machines and commissioning stations, plus also access and supply areas.
