Sira links up with Toshiba to extend the Sira IEC 61508 certification assessment capability into the Far East, specifically to Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan

Sira and the Toshiba Corporation Industrial and Power Systems and Services Company have entered an exciting agreement which will extend the Sira IEC 61508 certification capability into the Far East Under the terms of this agreement, Toshiba will act as a Sira Business Associate, carrying out assessments of clients and their products for compliance with the requirements of IEC 61508 on behalf of Sira, initially in Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan

Sira will be responsible for issuing the resulting certificates and ensuring that the activities of its Associates continue to meet Sira high standards.

The result of this new partnership will be to provide companies with an easy and cost-effective route to IEC 61508 certification.

Manufacturers, designers, installers and users across sectors such as process, transport, energy and environmental can be confident in obtaining a practical and commercial approach to compliance with this new alliance in the Far East.

Mr Yasuo Tanabe, Toshiba negotiator, comments: "This relationship will open up valuable new prospects for both companies in a part of the world where there is a growing awareness of the need to demonstrate compliance with IEC 61508 within a number of industry sectors where safety is a significant issue".

IEC 61508 is the international standard for the functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety-related systems.

It is a generic life-cycle document, and is used as the basis for industry sector-specific safety standards, such as IEC 61511 for Safety Instrumented Systems in the Process Industry.
