MCERTS improves quality of environmental data
MCERTS certification scheme for environmental monitoring products and services is making it easier for companies with regulated processes to keep the Environment Agency happy
A certification scheme for environmental monitoring products and services is making it easier for companies to keep the Environment Agency happy.
The Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) is run by Sira on behalf of the Environment Agency.
MCERTS aims to improve the quality of environmental monitoring data delivered by companies with regulated processes.
Bob Cooper, deputy chief executive of Sira Certification Service, said companies that use MCERTS-compliant products can expect less attention from inspectors.
"Not having MCERTS is like driving an old car without an MOT certificate.
Police are more likely to pull you over if you're in an older car but the MOT certificate proves the vehicle is fit for purpose," Cooper said.
The Environment Agency is planning to carry out audits of operator self-monitoring.
Companies will be assessed according to a set of audit questions - the higher the score, the better a company is performing.
Use of MCERTS compliant equipment will ensure a higher score for the site, which could result in less attention from the Environment Agency.
Paul Wiggins, an MCERTS project manager for the Environment Agency, said Pollution Prevention Control permits require companies to use MCERTS compliant products if they are available.
"MCERTS is continuing to evolve and is here to stay".
MCERTS is based on the British Standards ISO 17025 for monitoring and equipment testing, EN 45004 for inspection, EN 45011 for product certification and EN 45013 for personnel competency.
The scheme assures users of certified products and services that they comply with national and international regulations, including the Water Resources Act, Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations and EC Directives.
