Measuring equipment for crude oil with an accuracy factor 10 times that required by the International standard has been supplied by Sheffield based Skeltonhall Limited for use in Malaysia

Measuring equipment with an accuracy factor 10 times that required by the International standard (API Manual of Measurement Standards, Chapter 4), has been supplied by Sheffield based Skeltonhall Limited With crude oil selling at around USD28 per barrel, the added confidence that this increased accuracy provides will be welcomed by all parties to sales agreements of hydrocarbon products

The equipment has been provided to Imtech Systems of Singapore for installation at the Murphy Oil facility in Malaysia.

Known as a bi-directional meter prover, it is used to check the accuracy and repeatability of flow meters that deliver large quantities of crude oil or refined products between producers, refiners, exporters and distributors.

In many cases tax is paid to governments based on the metered quantities, and are subject to inspection and verification by the local fiscal authorities.

The Murphy Oil meter prover is designed to calibrate 8 inch Smith Sentry flow meters measuring crude oil flowing at 795 cubic metres per hour and a pressure of 19.3 barg.

It includes a 16 inch diameter calibrated loop, with 20 inch sphere launching chambers, and an 8 inch flow diverter valve.

The repeatability and volume of the meter prover was verified by Saybolt UK Limited, a company recognised by fiscal agencies and oil companies throughout the world.

The results of the calibration by Saybolt showed repeatability of 0.002% (the requirements of API Chapter 4 being 0.02%).

Meter provers work by providing a known volume in a section of pipe between two detectors.

A polyurethane or nitrile sphere actuates the first detector and at the same time starts to record the quantity of hydrocarbons passing through the flow meter.

When the sphere strikes a second detector the recorded volume on the flow meter is stopped.

After the volume in the meter prover, and that passing the flow meter have been corrected to the same temperature and pressure effects, the results can be compared, and a correction factor applied to the meter readings that are used until the next calibration.

At the heart of these Skeltonhall repeated successful results, is the Company ''Micro-set" meter prover sphere detector.

The 'Micro-set' can be used on meter provers from 4 inches to 36 inches.

Two models are available depending upon the pressure rating of the equipment, ANSI Class 600, and ANSI Class 1500.

Skeltonhall also manufacture units that can be fitted to existing meter provers, replacing detectors of lesser repeatability or where the equipment is being refurbished.

Skeltonhall design and supply: Liquid and Gas Metering Systems, Meter Prover Systems, The 'Micro-set' sphere detector, Pig Traps and Pigging Stations, Gas Pressure Regulation Stations, Density BS and W and Sampling Systems, Meter Calibration Rigs and Volumetric Calibration Vessels.

They also operate an equipment/materials procurement service for petrochemical plants, pipeline companies and contractors.
