Solartron Mobrey, a leading manufacturer of measurement and control sensors, has launched a new water level sensor for the marine industry.

The intrinsically safe and marine-certified Squing level sensor has been developed to enable bulk carrier operators to meet the new SOLAS regulation, XII/12, recently passed by the International Maritime Organisation.

This requires all bulk carrier vessels to fit water ingress detection systems on or before the vessel's first service after 1 July 2004.

The Marine Squing sensor also carries certification from leading marine classification societies including Lloyds, ABS, ATEX and Germanischer Lloyd.

SOLAS XII/12 has been put in place to protect vessel and crew from any problems that could occur should water mix with the cargo.

The document states that water level detectors must be installed "in each cargo hold, giving audible and visual alarms, one when the water level above the inner bottom in any hold reaches a height of 0.5m and another at a height not less than 15% of the depth of the cargo hold but not more than 2m".

A compact instrument of 316SS construction, the Marine Squing is ideal for this environment as it can be simply mounted, without causing obstruction, into a T-piece offset on the sounding tube found in all bulk cargo holds.

An integral magnetically operated test point on each sensor facilitates the mandatory testing between loads.

Based on the Solartron Mobrey Squing level sensor that has proven reliability in the process, chemical and petrochemical industries, the bespoke sensor meets all the requirements of the SOLAS regulation.

These include the ability to operate in the temperature range 40C to +150C and IP68 protection for 20 days submersion at 30m.

A factory fitted and sealed flame retardant marine cable in lengths of 15, 30 or 50m is included.
