Selerity Technologies has successfully shown that its bespoke SFC oven solution is ideally suited for the development of the ASTM Method D-5186 for the analysis of diesel fuels

Selerity Technologies, a specialist in Temperature Programmed Liquid Chromatography (TPLC) and Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC), has successfully shown that its bespoke SFC oven solution is ideally suited for the development of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Method D-5186 Fitted with a temperature-controlled pressure transducer to exercise consistent pressure control, the SFC 4000 Series satisfies the criteria mandated by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), including the use of SFC with carbon dioxide and a flame ionisation detector (FID)

CARB has made it compulsory for all diesel fuels sold in the State of California to be analysed for aromatic and polynuclear aromatic content using ASTM D-5186.

As environmental legislation regulating process and quality control in the petroleum industry becomes stricter, new analytical methods for the determination of the total aromatic content of fuels are needed to overcome the limitations of existing methods.

The Selerity SFC method is a welcome alternative to HPLC or GC/MS methodologies.

The Selerity findings show that using the Series 4000 leads to unsurpassed reproducibility.

Separations carried out on two diesel and two aviation fuels demonstrate the precision of the results, which, expressed as RSD, were better than 3% - within the limits specified by method D-5186.

Further details about these experiments and their accompanying results are available in an application note (number 302) developed by Selerity.

The Selerity Series 4000 instrumentation addresses the limitations of gas and liquid chromatography to separate compounds prone to thermal instability, and subject to other causes of ineffective separations, including a lack of chromophores.

The Series 4000 consists of a high capacity force air oven with a flame ionisation detector for rapid heating and cooling; a 10ml syringe pump for pulse-free mobile phase delivery and minimal usage of carbon dioxide; an autosampler; and the system is fully automated through a data acquisition software package.
