Selerity Polaratherm significantly improves Carotenoid separations at low temperatures.

Selerity Technologies, the temperature programmed liquid chromatography specialist, has successfully demonstrated that its Polaratherm total temperature controller can significantly improve sub-ambient separations of carotenoids - nutraceuticals, that when taken as a nutritional supplement, are powerful anti-oxidants that protect against heart disease and cancer, and boost the immune system.

Typically the quantitation of carotenoids involves complex mobile phases with up to six components.

The analysis is usually performed at ambient temperatures using a C18 or C30 column, with run times in excess of 60 minutes.

By using the Polaratherm, Selerity has performed an analysis using a sub-ambient temperature program with a simplified mobile phase of 1.20% THF in acetonitrile.

The analysis time was reduced by more than 50% to less than 30 minutes, whilst the peaks became sharper at elevated temperatures.

The new Selerity application note confirms the advantages of using extended temperature programming in order to achieve more efficient chromatographic analyses.

The technique significantly simplifies method development, greatly reduces run times and improves the resolution of carotenoids using sub-ambient temperatures.
