Spirax Sarco pilot operated pressure reducing valves have been upgraded with the introduction of a hi-tech, variable rate, pressure control spring, simplifying ordering and cutting spares stockholding costs.

Just one version of the DP17 valve covers downstream operating pressures from 0.2 to 17 bar g, rather than the three variants previously required.

Fewer options makes ordering easier, eliminates the risk of the wrong valve being specified and substantially cuts the number of units that need to be held as spares.

In addition, a valve can now be changed to an application with a different pressure requirement without the cost of changing the control spring.

The DP17 is the Spirax Sarco best selling valve and leads the UK market.

It is suitable for use with steam, compressed air or other industrial gases, has a maximum operating temperature of 232C and is available in sizes from DN15 to DN50.

Typical applications include lowering the pressure of steam from a high pressure distribution line to the point of use and as an automatic temperature control for applications such as autoclaves, retorts, and corrugators.

The valve works by balancing the downstream pressure against the control spring, which then modulates the main valve via a small pilot valve.

With no external power source needed, the valve has low operating costs while providing accurate control and fast response under stable or changing demand.

The new variable rate pressure control spring is conical, using a progressively smaller coil diameter.

As it compresses, the spring provides an increasing resistance as stiffer coils take up the load.

This variable rate of resistance is the key to providing the valve's highly accurate performance over such a large pressure range.
