How to succeed in any major steam
project
Spirax Sarco delivered one of the biggest boiler house projects in the UK, on time and on budget, and went on to provide the complete steam installation across the new Polestar GBP100M print facility
When UK printing group Polestar committed to investing GBP100m in building Europe's largest printworks to an extremely tight schedule, it turned to Spirax Sarco to provide an ultramodern GBP1.4 million turnkey steam system to meet its process heating demands Spirax Sarco designed, supplied and installed a complete unmanned boiler house and all the components of the steam distribution system throughout the 43,000m2 site

It also undertook the complex project management needed to bring the steam system on-line within a very tight schedule.
Despite the complexity of managing a project that involved interfacing with seven other contractors on the site, Spirax Sarco helped Polestar to meet its critical deadline of delivering the first news print from the site by April 2005.
When Spirax Sarco started work on site in November 2004, the company knew it had just a few months to deliver the largest boiler house construction project in the UK.

By mid-March 2005 Spirax Sarco had the boiler house fully operational.
"The speed with which the project was done is outstanding," says Mr Richard Keane, Engineering and Project Manager at Polestar: "Getting it done on time and within budget has been a huge achievement".
At the project outset, Polestar sought advice from Spirax Sarco with an initial enquiry based on a calculation of the steam demand of the presses and other equipment.
"We gave Spirax Sarco the outline specification and the volumes of steam required.
After that we relied heavily on the expertise of the team from Spirax Sarco to deliver what we wanted," explains Mr Keane.
This entailed Spirax Sarco taking a high-level view of the entire project and not just simply supplying steam control equipment.
The first phase of the project encompassed the provision of a complete boiler house, but as Spirax Sarco became more involved during the design and planning phase, it realised it could offer much more.
As well as the boiler house, Spirax Sarco used its expertise to provide a budget design for the steam distribution system, as well as a proposal for project managing the entire steam system build.
Spirax Sarco is well qualified to take on such a critical role.
Its extensive project management experience of major steam systems enabled Spirax Sarco to confidently take total responsibility for ensuring the steam system - without which the entire printworks could not operate - was delivered as planned.
According to Mr Keane, the dependability of Spirax Sarco and its highly committed team of experts proved to be a major asset for the project.
SERVICE AGREEMENT SECURES LONG-TERM PEACE OF MIND.
Spirax Sarco is also helping Polestar secure the long-term future of its steam supply through a five-year service agreement.
The deal covers all the Spirax Sarco equipment on the Sheffield site, offering 24/7 telephone access to technical experts should any issues arise.
Each year Spirax Sarco carries out a two-day steam trap survey across the site.
The agreement also includes full breakdown cover for all the steam equipment on the presses, as well as the metering and boiler house monitoring equipment.
The service agreement also covers Spirax Sarco engineers shutting down each boiler in turn and annually carrying out full functionality testing of all the internal equipment in the boiler house.
This supplies Polestar with a certificate for insurance purposes.
