Flexible screw conveyors for abrasive
materials

Starts Spiroflow announce their new 'Rhinoveyor' range of flexible screw conveyors for abrasive materials, such as powders and granules

Starts Spiroflow announce their new Rhinoveyor range of flexible screw conveyors for abrasive materials Spiroflow have pioneered the design, manufacture and application of flexible screw conveyors for over 30 years

Now, with tough black conveying tubes, the Rhinoveyor range extends the scope of these versatile conveyors into applications for abrasive materials hitherto deemed to be dangerous territory! Flexible screw conveyors are an effective mechanical means of conveying powders and granules - offering the simplest and lowest cost solution for a multiplicity of applications.

They comprise a heat-treated carbon or stainless steel spiral rotating within a semi-flexible conveying tube.

Most commonly this tube is of food grade Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE).

A key factor to the suitability of flexible screw conveyors for abrasive applications is their simplicity and lack of bearings.

The conveying tube is effectively one long support whilst the conveyed product acts as the lubricant centralising the rotating spiral within the tube.

Wear is only a problem with UHMWPE tubes when handling the most abrasive products - life with many materials is almost indefinite.

In any case, tubes and spirals are easily replaced and, for most moderately abrasive applications, the infrequency of such replacements means that the viability of flexible screw conveyors is never put in to question.

Tests have confirmed that the new Spiroflow Rhinoveyor conveying tubes have a significantly greater life on applications beyond food, dairy and pharmaceutical products.

Accordingly, Spiroflow can now offer more durable conveyors for the most aggressive products such as sintered metals, PFA, pumice, sand, aggregates, silica, cement and carborundum.

Traditionally it has been recommended that flexible screw conveyors must always run full of material.

Running empty can lead to excessive noise and wear.

However, the nature of the new Rhinoveyor conveying tubes means that running empty no longer creates the wear and noise associated with UHMWPE tubes.

However, as flexible spiral conveyors are not totally self-emptying, they ideally suited for transferring material from storage to weigh hoppers or to a process but not for transferring pre-weighed batches of material where total transfer is required.

Flexible screw conveyors can, typically, carry material to a maximum distance of 20m, although multiple, linked units can extend to greater distances as required.

The maximum throughput for the new Rhinoveyor range can be has high as 5 tonnes/hr dependent upon the material and the angle at which it is to operate.

Of course Spiroflow Flexible Screw Conveyors will still be available with their readily recognised UHMWPE conveying tubes for food, pharmaceutical, fine chemicals and other applications.

With UHMWPE tubes and stainless steel contact parts they offer a high level of hygiene for food, dairy and pharmaceutical applications.

Spiroflow are specialists in the conveying and weighing of dry bulk solids.

This includes the safe and efficient filling and discharging of bulk bags (FIBCs) too.
