SPX Process Equipment has been awarded the contract to supply IOCL (India) with 45 Plenty side entry mixers for the Paradip tank farm project on the East coast of India The tank farm is a major new investment by IOCL and involves 15 tanks each being equipped with three SPX PE Plenty 29P-70 STM30 mixers for controlling and preventing the accumulation of Bottom Sludge and Water (BS and W) deposits during the storage of crude oil

The accumulation of BS and W and its removal is a problem that the crude oil industry constantly faces as it can have a considerable knock-on effect for a refinery unless procedures are implemented to prevent it from occurring.
The best way to control and remove BS and W is to keep the contents of the storage tank in a constant state of contact motion and swivel angle side entry mixers provide the most effective solution.
With this equipment, sludge is suspended and can be evenly fed to the tank discharge outlet.
"Plenty side entry swivel angle mixers with a recommended programme of operation are in operation at many refineries around the world," comments Paul Baker of SPX Process Equipment: "The alternative course of action is to carry out period tank cleaning, but this can be hazardous, expensive and incur storage capacity downtime.
Evidence shows that savings of thousands of pounds can be made by using Plenty mixers".
The accumulation of BS and W reduces available storage space, corrosion of tank floors and lower shell plates, and if slugs of BS and W break free during pump-down (discharge) then serious damage can be caused to transfer pumps possibly resulting in disruption of the refinery.
In addition, large accumulations will result in floating roof damage when the tank is in pump down condition.
There are, however, financial benefits to be gained by controlling and removing BS and W build ups using Plenty side entry swivel angle mixers.
Over 70% of BS and W comes in the form of valuable hydrocarbons which can be recovered, thereby contributing to plant profitability.
Savings are also made by reducing tank cleaning to a minimum, whilst the expensive environmental issue of sludge disposal is removed.
