Servomex has introduced a new member of its family of gas analysers, designed specifically to meet the demands of the new modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) testing applications in the food industry

Based on the successful safe area 5200 series, the new 5200 Food Pack has been modified for small volume sample testing, making it ideally suited for batch measurement of MAP applications Although the 5200 Food Pack has similar features and functionality to the earlier Model 574 and 1450 analysers, this latest addition offers users an impressive range of improved functionality over the earlier models

It features single or dual gas measurements (O2 and/or CO2) and RS 232, datalogging and alarms as standard.

The integrated datalogging capability in the analyser allows for up to 200 readings to be stored in the internal memory.

Another significant benefit for the food industry is that access to the 5200 Food Pack can be password protected and each calibration procedure is automatically tracked - providing users with an additional layer of process traceability.

Users will also benefit from the design of the 5200 Food Pack - the device is both lightweight and portable and has a smaller footprint than previous models.

Other features include an easy-to-use menu system and high definition white LCD display.

This LCD shows the measured component level in large, easy to read figures, plus indications of analyser status, output range, fault alarms and a concentration alarm.

The unit can be specified with advanced lithium ion rechargeable batteries, the level of charge remaining is also displayed.

A number of sampling options are available on the 5200 Food Pack, all of which have been designed specifically to meet the requirements of MAP testing applications.

Features include an internal pump for semi-automatic sample extraction, a solenoid valve with or without an external pump, a can piercing unit and a syringe.

The common problems associated with electrochemical and zirconia sensors include their consumable nature and associated ongoing maintenance costs.

In addition, specifically for coffee applications, errors may occur as a result of carbon monoxide forming with oxygen at the high operating temperatures of the zirconia.

The Servomex paramagnetic technology overcomes these common problems.

Furthermore, the non-depleting paramagnetic technology in the sensing cell enables operators to be certain that the analyser will always function correctly; in contrast, other sensing technologies can degrade, giving no indication that the readings are misleading.

Aleks Cvetanovska of the Servomex Group believes that the launch of the 5200 Food Pack analyser is a timely one: "Supermarkets are placing increased demands on producers to extend shelf life - and MAP provides an effective method of extending shelf life by 50-500%.

The Food Pack was launched in response to demands from food packaging companies for highly accurate, fast, reliable and repeatable MAP sampling equipment".
