The new weights and measures approved 600 kg scale has replaced an existing dormant floor scale located beneath a rice cereal dispensing hopper.
The system is used for weighing out bulk cereal for resale to other companies within the Nestle group and large UK institutions.
Although the existing 1500 mm square platform had given excellent service, carrying out routine cleaning required several maintenance operatives to lift the heavy steel platform out of the pit.
This was not only a time consuming exercise, but there was growing concern that it presented an unacceptable health and safety issue for the operatives.
Stevens have a strong working relationship with Cereal Partners and therefore Factory 2 Maintenance Manager Paul Weaver had no hesitation in turning to them for an answer to this tricky problem.
As he explains: "Stevens already service all of our weighing equipment and quickly came up with the perfect solution.
This involved installing one of their stainless steel floor scales fitted with a hinged weighing top, which is controlled by gas struts, similar to those used on car bonnets and tailgates.
This means the top can be lifted up with the minimum of effort, allowing full access to the area beneath and around the scale.
As a result the cleaning process can now be done almost effortlessly and quickly by our Hygiene Team, without tying up any of my maintenance team.
The installation was carried out with the minimum of fuss and disruption to the operation.".
