Long stroke double seat mixproof valves supplied by Sudmo UK are ensuring soups produced at the Baxters Grimsby plant continue to remain wholesome and tempting

Long stroke double seat mixproof valves supplied by Sudmo UK are ensuring soups produced at the Baxters Grimsby plant continue to remain wholesome and tempting Over the years Baxters have built an enviable reputation for their legendary range of canned soups, which include the Favourite, Luxury, Vegetable, Healthy Choice and Organic brands

More recently they have used this experience to launch their new range of 'deliciously fresh' chilled and frozen soups.

When he was starting his business, George Baxter constantly exhorted himself, and those around him, "to be different, be better," little guessing that these words would remain an inspiration to his great-grandchildren, one hundred and thirty years later.

The current chairman, Gordon Baxter, describes the business succinctly; "We take the produce of our native hills and glens, capture it in cans jars and pouches, and then get out and sell it around the world.

Remarkably the company continues to remain entirely in the hands of the Baxter family and has taken on, and vanquished, the Goliaths of the food business.

Processed ready meal food products are becoming progressively more 'adventurous' in terms of the size and nature of their ingredients and this is placing increasing demands on process engineers to ensure the products can be transported through the process without damage.

Sudmo long stroke valves have been specially developed to meet the exacting demands from manufacturers of particulate foods.

The long stroke design is significantly more effective and hygienic than standard ball valves, which are notoriously difficult to clean.

Standard stroke valves are also ineffective for such applications and renowned for pulverising the solids in these products.

They also easily become blocked, causing unwanted delays in production.

By contrast, the LSVP valves allow large food pieces to pass freely through without any damage.

The LSVP series have a precision machined body made from a single piece of forged stock 316L, a high grade non-porous stainless steel.

The valves feature a low number of product contact seals in the product area that can be replaced simply and expediently.

The seal materials can withstand sterilizing temperatures up to 150C.

Baxters' production supervisor Ian Fytche is very upbeat about the installation and as he explains: "Throughput of frozen and chilled soups at the Grimsby plant can peak at 250 tonnes a day.

We have over 20 Sudmo 75 mm diameter valves fitted in a special manifold arrangement and they have now been in operation for two years, without even a seal needing changing.

Their hygienic design with mixproof technology and a long stroke mean food particulates up to 25mm in diameter can pass through un-blemished - thereby ensuring we maintain a top quality product.

We produce over eight different soup varieties and the Sudmo double seat technology guarantees that all process and cleaning fluids in the complex routing systems remain separated even in the event of seal failures.".
