CRO-Emulsion pioneer scoops top
innovation prize
One of the UK pioneers in MicroEmulsion technology has been chosen for the Gannochy Award for Innovation of the Royal Society of Edinburgh - Scotland's highest accolade for achievement in innovation
One of the UK pioneers in MicroEmulsion technology has been chosen as this year's recipient of the highly prestigious Gannochy Award for Innovation of the Royal Society of Edinburgh - Scotland's highest accolade for individual achievement in innovation The recipient of this year's Gannochy Award of GBP50,000 is John Harrison, the founder of Surface Active Solutions Limited (SAS) - the Grangemouth-based research and development company that is actively commercialising an innovative patented specialist cleaning chemical technology - the MicroEmulsions technology - on a global basis

Petrochemical plant oil-contaminated waste treated
Surface Active Solutions secures an 18 year deal to treat refinery and petrochemical oil contaminated wastes at Grangemouth using a range of micro-emulsion cleaning product and support services
The award gives due recognition of almost a decade of research and development work and will serve to bring considerable credibility to the SAS MicroEmulsion cleaning technology to help John Harrison realise the true potentials of the technology in key industrial global markets such as the oil and gas sector.
Specialist cleaning applications in industry now face increased levels of scrutiny due to the effect that chemical product efficiency and design has on technical performance and company economics.
In addition, more stringent global Health and Safety and Environmental legislation (HSE) is driving the need for more specialised, more environmentally sound and more effective cleaning agents and solutions to be produced.

Bacteria and many other micro-organisms contain enzymes that can repair UV-damaged DNA, a process known as 're-activation': research shows this does not occur with medium pressure UV disinfection
John and his team have spearheaded a revolutionary technology based upon the use of clever surfactant chemistry with optimised molecular design and formulating techniques that have a very significant impact in many key areas of industrial application.
The unique and novel chemistry has the ability to solubilise and dissolve oil in water and vice versa.
These advanced surfactant systems provide superior cleaning performance with the added benefit and capability to cleanly separate out organic components for recovery and recycling purposes.
The process also produces clean wastewater for safe disposal, eliminating the production of additional oil contaminated hazardous wastes and emulsions.
The technology therefore sets new standards by facilitating waste treatment, promoting waste minimisation, minimising technical and environmental risk, improving operational efficiency and reducing operating and production costs.
Commenting on his award, John Harrison said, "I am truly grateful to all those at the Gannochy Trust and the Royal Society of Edinburgh for making this Award possible - without any doubt this has been the highlight of my achievements to date and will be my motivation for many years to come.
Winning this award will enable me to invest further capital in strengthening our global capability for commercial product sales and to establish a manufacturing base here in Scotland".
Lord Sutherland of Houndwood, The President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh commented, " John Harrison is a very worthy winner of the Gannochy Trust Innovation Award of The Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Over the past decade, he has made an outstanding contribution to his field.
He has combined vision with technical expertise and demonstrated an admirable adaptability to develop ideas.
He and his collaborators are contributing to wealth generation in Scotland".
Russell Leather, Chairman of The Gannochy Trust, added, "The Trustees of the Gannochy Trust are delighted with the very high standard of work submitted for this important award.
We share the view that it is of great importance for our Nation's future that we encourage younger people to pursue careers in fields of research that promotes Scotland's inventiveness internationally.
Our joint award recognises outstanding individual achievement that contributes to the common good of Scotland.
The experience of being a judge for this event has been inspiring.
As the winning innovator, John Harrison has every reason to be proud of attaining an outstanding level of achievement.".
