Systech permeation analyser tests Mylar
film
Oxygen Permeation Analysers from Systech Instruments are used at the DuPont Teijin Films Global Research Centre on Teesside to monitor the performance of Mylar packaging film
In Europe, DuPont Teijin Films produces around 100,000 tonnes of Mylar polyester film each year Around 33% is used in packaging with the rest used in many other applications from building insulation and cards to electronics and imaging

In the UK, the DuPont Teijin Films Global Research Centre, at Wilton on Teesside, specialises in the development of new products and advising users on specific applications.
Mylar brand packaging film is widely used in the convenience food industry as part of modified atmosphere packaging structures (MAP) to maintain the inert atmosphere without obscuring the product.
In this application, oxygen permeability is a key factor, as leakage of oxygen through the film will have a significant influence on the product shelf life.
At the Wilton Research Centre, Systech 8000 Oxygen Permeation Analysers are used to measure the permeability of film to assess its performance in new product developments and customer applications.
DuPont Teijin Films selected the Systech Analyser because it offered a broad testing window with the oxygen permeability of a film sample able to be measured across a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels.
This capability is especially relevant as it allows detailed studies of film performance under conditions reflecting real world conditions, from refrigerated to ambient temperature displays.
The analysis is achieved without complex extrapolations providing a unique combination of speed and precision.
The control software, run on any Windows platform, provides a user-friendly interface that automatically guides the operator through the test procedure.
According to DuPont Teijin Films Application Specialist, Moira Jeffels, the Systech analyser has proved to be a valuable addition to the laboratory facilities and provides all of the data necessary for both new product development and customer application evaluation.
Systech Instruments is one of the world's leading designers and manufacturers of gas analysis instrumentation and has agents and distributors in most major countries.
Systech gas analysis equipment is an essential part of the production process in many industries, including industrial gases, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics and food, and is widely used by university and industrial research facilities.
