Intelligent optic direct-reading sensor patent technology: an introduction to its applications in monitoring mechanical consumption meters for simpler automated measurement recording

The special operation mode and measurement precision make this technology usable in all measuring instruments with a mechanical counter Tai Feng Yuan Video Digital Co has developed a new solution for exact collecting of data from measuring instruments using patented technology in the optic direct-reading sensor (ODRS)

ODRS technology of figure wheel counting and synchronous carry through of mechanical driving using electro-optic conversion and coding of absolute position, collects the data shown on the wheel exactly.

An ODRS is installed on the counter figure wheel, independently to the mechanical drive.

ODRS adds additional functions on such original measuring instruments, without affecting the original mechanical counter, which might have been authenticated by national institutes.

ODRS consists of three basic parts: mechanical, electro-optic conversion, and controlling.

Under the control of the managing system, ODRS collects the absolute position of the figure wheel which provides the measuring data, makes electro-optic conversion and digital coding and then transmit codes to the data management centre.

The key technology of ODRS is exact and corresponding 'mirror' relation between the absolute position of the wheel and the digital codes after conversion, to guarantee data collection is exactly the same as is shown on the wheel.

The operational characteristic is such that ODRS is not powered normally, and only powered-up by the management system at the instant of collection which makes it have higher reliability and lowest possible power consumption.

Because of the separation mechanically and electrically between ODRS and the counter, ODRS does not affect the measurement process, it does not disturb the operational mechanism and measuring precision of the original instruments themselves.

Summary of the characteristics and operation of ODRS.

1 Advanced patent technology.

2 In accordance with principle of metrology; no involvement or disturbance of the measurement process and precision; all data collected is kept exactly the same as shown on figure wheel.

3 Powered-up only at the moment of data collection, using the intermittent operation mode.

4 Higher reliability and lifetime than the figure wheel of measuring instruments.

5 Various flexible interfaces for data remote transmission.

The patented ODRS can be used in all measuring instruments on which measuring data is shown using a mechanical counter, it guarantees unique data transfer during the measurement procedure, which is in accordance with metrology principles.

The collecting process by ODRS operates in the same way as taking the data by eye, to guarantee 100% precision of collecting and a huge cost reduction in manpower: ODRS has also standard communication interface (RS485, RS232 or TTL) for measuring data to be sent to the managing system directly without conversion of analogue to digital.

It opens a new era for collecting of data in many different measuring fields (for example meters for energy supply consumption of electricity, water and gas).

Together with advanced wireless collection management system, measuring instruments based on ODRS can be constructed as next generation of collecting and remote transmission system.
