Ultramax all-welded plate heat exchanger
The high volume Ultramax all-welded plate heat exchanger for extreme temperature and high pressure applications, plus duties involving corrosive substances unsuitable for traditional gasketed units
Tranter PHE has launched a high volume Ultramax all-welded plate heat exchanger for extreme temperature and high pressure applications, and duties involving corrosive substances unsuitable for traditional gasketed models The all welded plate design offers huge advantages in terms of heat transfer, efficiency and compact design over the shell and tube technology still used in process industries

Tranter offers maximum efficiency heat exchangers
Global leader in plate heat exchanger technology Tranter has combined the compact, space-saving footprint and proven efficiency of a plate heat exchanger in the gasket free all-welded Ultramax
The large capacity Ultramax is suitable for heat exchange of liquids, oil and gases or two-phase mixtures at temperatures and pressures up to 343C and pressures up to 70 barg (1015 psig) for standard range units with extended temperature and pressure range versions also available to order.
Significantly higher U values result from the unique turbulence created by the corrugated plates while the velocity profile eliminates stagnant areas and promotes maximum heat transfer.
The hot media flows on one side of the plate while the cold media flows on the other and this arrangement provides true countercurrent flow, delivering superior performance compared to cross flow designed units.
Countercurrent flow offers full LMTD and allows closer temperature approaches.
Large capacity or multi-pass configurations incorporate up to five cores within a single frame.
The Ultramax range offers eight different plate lengths, including the largest plate size in its class, with an area of 0.989 m2 (10.65 ft2), allowing greater flexibility in process flow.
Maximum surface cooling area of the largest Ultramax is 300m2 with flow rates in excess of 1500m3/hr.
The large capacity Ultramax is also manufactured in accordance with ASME VIII, U Stamp and PED with the ability to handle higher level documentation for process contracts.
Welded plate heat exchangers are used extensively in chemically aggressive processes including oil and gas production and refineries; hydrocarbon processing units such as primaries, intermediates and polymers; pharmaceutical and speciality fine chemicals; and inorganic chemicals production such as chlor-alkali or hydrogen peroxide.
David Collins, Tranter PHE Manager said: "The large capacity Ultramax boasts the efficiency, high performance and minimal maintenance of the original Ultramax unit with even more cost effectiveness owing to its smaller footprint and ability to combine the work previously done by two or three units.".
